ASUU SPEAKS ON SLAIN UNIMAID LECTURERS

The lecturers’ union of the University of Maiduguri, Unimaid, has confirmed that five staff of the university were killed when Boko Haram ambushed an NNPC oil exploration team. The union, ASUU, also said on Thursday that four other staff are still missing from the attack. The Governor of Borno State, Kashim Shettima, on Thursday also commiserated with the management of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, and Unimaid over the Tuesday Boko Haram ambush of the team who were on an oil prospecting mission to the Lake Chad Basin. The team comprised Unimaid staff who were recruited by the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, members of Civilian Joint Task Force, CJTF, and military personnel. The NNPC had earlier told PREMIUM TIMES that the abducted persons were not its full staff but that of the Geology department of Unimaid to whom part of the oil exploration was subcontracted. SENATE BARS JONATHAN FROM RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT

The Nigerian Senate, on Wednesday, barred a former president, Goodluck Jonathan from running for a second term in office. This was done during voting in series of far reaching new Bills being passed by the upper legislative chamber. Former Nigeria President, Goodluck Jonathan The Bill sought that any Vice President who had completed a tenure of a sitting President and contested a fresh four years mandate shall not be eligible to run for a second term of office. The Senate also approved the membership of former Presidents of the Senate and Speakers of the House of Representatives of the Council of State. The lawmakers however rejected deletion of the Land Use Act from the Constitution. Also ill-fated was the move to alter the Second Schedule, Parts I and II of the Constitution to move certain items to the Concurrent Legislative List to give more legislative powers to states. AREWA YOUTH REVERSE QUIT NOTICE

The leader of Arewa Youths Consultative Forum (AYCF), Yerima Shettima, has made a U-turn on the quit notice given to the Igbos to leave Northern states before October 1 this year. Fielding questions from newsmen over the weekend, Shettima said Igbos are now safe in the north. He reassured the Igbos living in the region, that they are safe and at the appropriate time, announcement would be made to reverse the quit notice. The youth leader said, “They [Igbos] are safe. You can be rest assured they are safe. TECHNOLOGY: NAF SIGNS MOU WITH UNIMAID

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) on Monday, July 17, in a brief ceremony at its headquarters in Abuja, unveiled an Alpha Jet aircraft anti-skid test bench, which it had locally produced, in collaboration with the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID). The anti-skid braking system of the Alpha Jet aircraft is a critical system, which helps in slowing down the speed of the aircraft and maintaining its balance even on wet runways. The newly produced test bench helps to simulate the performance of the principal components of the anti-skid system thereby guiding maintenance. The NAF and UNIMAID also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) towards consolidating on the research and development efforts between the two organizations. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board have stated that it will not condone multiple registrations for Direct Entry and Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination. DON MOEN DIES AT 66

American singer-songwriter, pastor evangelist, Don Moen has died after short battle with stomach pain. His family confirmed that he died early this morning at General Acute Care (GAC) Hospital in California shortly after being rushed to the hospital. The cause of his death is not immediately known as the body is deposited at the morgue for autopsy. President Donald also has expressed his tributes, saying Don Moen was “one of the best gospel artists that the country has ever produced”. According to record, the multiple award-winning star brought gospel to both old and younger generation through his unique style and drew thousands of people closer to the music genre. Three suicide bombers believed to be Boko Haram suicide bombers attacked the new male hostel block (A) of the institution Three male suicide bombers on Thursday at about 9.30 pm attacked the students’ hostel of the University of Maiduguri The attack was, however, repelled by security operatives at the University The attackers entered the hostel in spite of the trenches dug to fortify the security of the school. He said two of the bombers detonated their explosives and blew up themselves and causing a great damage to the building which is barely one year old. Yet another attacker was shot by security men while trying to flee the scene of the attack. This is coming at a time when students are on vacation. The Senate has urged the Federal Government to deploy critical security systems to the University of Maiduguri to ensure full surveillance and detection of security breaches in the institution. The Senate also called on security agencies to submit to it, a comprehensive plan of action on ways to contain the attacks on the university and assure constant security for it and its host community. The university had in recent times recorded attacks by the insurgent group, Boko Haram. The call followed a motion on “the need to avoid imminent disruption of academic activities and closure of the University of Maiduguri due to rising insecurity occasioned by the spate of bomb attacks”. Two FUTA students drown while taking ‘selfie’ in canoe Two students of the Federal University of Technology Akure, FUTA, drowned yesterday evening while reportedly taking selfie pictures on a canoe inside a river in the town. The two students who were both on the 300-level, were identified as Olabiyi Emmanuel from the Agriculture and Environmental Engineering, and Olukun Babatunde Alex from the department of Project Management Technology. Skye Bank manager sent to jail for N200m fraud The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) yesterday secured the conviction of Tajudeen Yusuf, a former branch manager of Skye Bank, Jos, before Justice Ambrose Alagwa of Federal High Court 1, Jos, Plateau State. The convict who was prosecuted on a five-count charge, following a complaint by his employers, allegedly defrauded Alhaji Usman Tetengi, a customer of the bank, to the tune of N200 million when he issued him fake deposit certificate and diverted the money to personal use. N-Power begins Test Today

The N-Power Assessment Tests will commence on the 1st of July, 2017. This was made known Friday afternoon via the programme twitter handle, @npower_ng. It explained that it is an online assessment and that each applicant will receive an SMS a day before his/her test. “Applicants who applied for N-Power TAX will write their assessment tests first.” The programme further stated that it is only those whose BVN matches their application, that will be contacted to write the test. Explaining “​Pre-selection​” in part of the process applicants will go through​, N-Power said the stage “​basically means conditional acceptance till your documents say you are who you claim to be​”.​ The N-Power portal reopened for registration on Tuesday​ June 13, 2017​.​ ​​​Its application, which has specific steps to be followed, ends on on July 13th 2017.
