THE HOLY ROSARY

BLOC ROSARY WEEK: 2019
On Friday, 16th August 2019,the Bloc Rosary Crusade members of All saints Chaplaincy University of Maiduguri began their Marian week and the day's speaker Rev. Fr. Solomon Zaku spoke on the Rosary, its origin biblical foundation and significance.

The Rosary is derived from the Latin word "Rosarium" (Rose flower).
It is a Christ centred prayer consisting of the 20 decades of the "Hail Mary" preceded by the "Our Father" with the meditation of mysteries. The Rosary is the summary of the new testament.

Praying the Rosary began about 800 years ago(1170-1221) when it was given to St. Dominic by the Blessed Virgin Mary stating it as a weapon to counter the heresy which promoted suicide where people killed themselves in order to save their souls. St.Dominic taught and prayed the Rosary and the heresy came to an end.
Pope Alexander (16th) encouraged people to pray the Rosary because it grants indulgence. Sooner,the Rosary started gaining popularity.
In the 16th century (1571) jihad was in practice and crusades were held to fight the jihad. Mary appeared to the Pope and instructed him to pray the Rosary before battle so he instructed the Soldiers to pray the Rosary before going to battle which they did and they conquered the war. Since then,the pope instituted 7th October as feast of our Lady of the Rosary.

The Rosary began with 150 "Hail Mary" in the 14th to 15th century before the introduction of "Our Father" and "Glory be to our father" was later added. In 1483, the 150 mysteries were reduced to 15 mysteries. Later on,other prayers like the Prayer taught to the 3 children of Fatima and others were added. In October 2002, Pope John Paul (2nd) added 5 more mysteries known as the mysteries of light and declared that year, the year of the Rosary.

Fr. Solomon Zaku also spoke on the 3 basic qualities of the Rosary which are:
1-Scriptural(Biblical Foundation)
2-Christological Prayer(Christ Centred)
3-Harmonious blend of vocal and meditative prayer.
  He further charged everyone to pray the Rosary always and take it seriously. He also asked everyone to shun all forms of blasphemy regarding the Rosary as all parts of it are scripted.

The 2023 NFCS CULTURAL WEEK arrived a fiestive and as usual, angelic, top the shelve offerings from our esteemed Praise Band and Choir. Their presentation of  were heavenly. An accord of all sections of the choir embellished in voices worthy of enchanting stones back to life. The Drama Band, rivalled only by the likes of Hollywood and Bollywood by acting drama that speaks about the cultural theme taged; Sharing our similarities and celebrating our difference ; revelled the gathered NFCSers and well wishers with the antics of their well prepared; singular performances, witht the cultural lessons of  well received and applauded.
