BE SENSITIVE TO THE NEEDS OF OTHERS

HOMILY FOR THE 26TH SUNDAY OF THE YEAR IN ORDINARY TIME C

Texts: Amos 6:1, 4-7;  Psalm 146:7.8 -10; I Timothy 6: 11-16; Luke 16:19-31

The readings of today speak to us on the importance of being sensitive to the needs of others. We live in a very difficult time in our country today. We have insecurity and humanitarian crises/ needs in different parts of the country. Many people, are sick, hungry and depressed. We need to come to their aid. Our readings cautioned us to the our best so as not to regret
In the first reading (Amos 6: 1, 4-7), Amos  the prophet of social justice  condemns those who live extravagantly or wastefully, with little or no concern for the poor or needy. The prophet Amos takes time to graphically describe the   extravagance of the rich in terms of their beds and meat (Amos 6:4), musical taste and instruments (Amos 6:5), wine and perfumes (Amos 6:6).
In the second reading, St. Paul tells us the kind of life we are supposed to live as Christians.
In the Gospel, we are presented with the story of the rich man and Lazarus. The sin of the Rich man is that of negligence and insensitivity. He failed to come to the aid of the poor man Lazarus. He was so concerned with his well-being that he failed to notice Lazarus.
This parable is a wake -up call for you and I .  Let us always remember that there is a  Lazarus at our gate or neighborhood needing a little attention, care or concern from us. The fact that Lazarus may not say anything does not mean he or she does not need anything; Lazarus may just be counting on your maturity, generosity and understanding!
 Let us not allow our wealth, ambition and quest for power to blind us so much so that we don't see those who need our assistance. We may not have much like the rich man, but the little we give can help in alleviating the pains of others. Let us use the opportunity we have to do good now tomorrow may be too late. Let us always remember that whatever we do to our brothers and sisters we did it to God and that we shall be rewarded according to our deeds.
May God grant us the grace to use the things of this world wisely through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Nigeria Federation of Catholic Students (NFCS) is a body encompassing catholic students in all high institutions of learning. Its history can be traced back to 1920 when the idea of catholic students unionism came up; an internal catholic study union (ICSU) was created in swiss with George de Montenach as the president to deepen the urgency for reconciliation in a world torn apart by the first world war. The 2023 NFCS CULTURAL WEEK arrived a fiestive and as usual, angelic, top the shelve offerings from our esteemed Praise Band and Choir. Their presentation of  were heavenly. An accord of all sections of the choir embellished in voices worthy of enchanting stones back to life. The Drama Band, rivalled only by the likes of Hollywood and Bollywood by acting drama that speaks about the cultural theme taged; Sharing our similarities and celebrating our difference ; revelled the gathered NFCSers and well wishers with the antics of their well prepared; singular performances, witht the cultural lessons of  well received and applauded.
